Employers Recognized for Helping People Move Toward Self-Sufficiency

 

Rochester Rehabilitation’s employment and job support training program Employment Connection, along with Job Development Network (JDN) recognized nine area businesses during this year’s Employer Recognition Awards and Networking Breakfast held on May 21st.

As an experienced provider of employment services, Employment Connection has been providing opportunities for people like Chandra, a refugee from Bhutan, to move from poverty to self-sufficiency.

In 2012, Chandra was referred to Rochester Rehabilitation’s Employment Connection. Through its Refugee Employment Services, Chandra soon found a job. A hard worker, his employers took note and Chandra was recommended for a higher-paying position at CooperVision, where he has worked for the last year. He has saved enough to purchase his own vehicle to travel to work and transport his family. He has also received Forklift Certification in order to stay competitive with other workers at his job site.

"When I came here (the U.S.),” says Chandra, “I felt lonely, like no one was here to help me. After coming to Rochester Rehabilitation it was only about two months before I had my job. Everything Rochester Rehabilitation does is important."

​

Jaclyn Lute was referred to Rochester Rehabilitation after she graduated from high school. She received driver training through DriveOn, and counseling, and job coaching through Employment Connection. The support services she received helped her earn a certificate in early childhood education from Monroe Community College and find a job at Lakeside Child and Family Center, where she’s worked for four years. Rochester Rehabilitation’s employment specialists have networked with dozens of local hiring managers in a broad range of businesses to fill vital roles and maximize employer and employee success.

​

Not only does work provide self-worth and financial independence, but also reduces reliance on public assistance and contributes to the local economy. More than 75% of the people who complete vocational programs secure employment for at least 20 hours per week and a ratio of 3:1 keep their job for at least one year.

​

Employment Connection recognized the following organizations for supporting or employing Employment Connection’s job seeking clients: Aerotek Staffing, E. J. Delmonte Corp., GCA Services, Strong Staffing, Lakeside Child and Family Center, Frank Rizzo Group, Wegmans, Volunteers of America, and West Irondequoit Central School District.

Job Development Network (JDN) – a collaborative group of employment professionals from many Rochester area agencies and employers – recognized ABVI Goodwill, Wegmans, and CORE Staffing for their ongoing support.
