Rochester Wheels win third place in Steve Barbato memorial basketball tournament
Rochester Wheels adult wheelchair basketball team demonstrates the significant abilities of athletes with disabilities through competition, tournaments and exhibition games. In the first Steve Barbato Memorial Basketball Tournament, the Rochester Wheels were honored to place third because the event played tribute to one of the team's most beloved members and longtime coach. Audiences delight in watching the Wheels take on staff from local schools and members of area organizations. Everyone plays the game from a wheelchair.
Today, the team has 17 members from Rochester, Buffalo and Syracuse and competes in tournaments throughout the northeast and Canada. Securing gymnasium space for games and covering travel costs for the team are a constant challenge.
