Aquatic Therapy

Rochester Rehabilitation Center has a warm water therapy pool available for treating clients who experience difficulty performing exercise on land.

The warm 94–96 degree temperature is beneficial in increasing flexibility and range of motion by reducing pain or abnormal muscle tone. The buoyancy of water enables people to perform exercises, which would be difficult without the support of water.

The therapy itself consists of purposeful therapeutic exercise in the water using a variety of positions to:

  • Reduce pain
  • Strengthen weakened muscles
  • Improve range of motion, balance, coordination or endurance

Because the properties of water allow earlier relearning of movement, aquatic therapy can improve progress in rehabilitation. Aquatic therapy may be offered in conjunction with other physical or occupational therapy, or it may be the primary form of treatment.

Therapists can also assist in the transition to the group water exercise programs available through SportsNet.
