Rochester Wheels place third in Steve Barbato memorial basketball tournament
April 18, 2011Rochester Wheels adult wheelchair basketball team demonstrates the significant abilities of athletes with disabilities through competition, tournaments and exhibition games. In the first Steve Barbato Memorial Basketball Tournament, the Rochester Wheels were honored to place third because the event played tribute to one of the team's most beloved members and longtime coach. The Rochester Wheels team partners with SportsNet, a program of Rochester Rehabilitation, and is a member of the NWBA (National Wheelchair Basketball Association).
SportsNet, founded in 1998, provides inclusive sports and recreation opportunities for people with developmental and physical disabilities. People of all abilities participate in local sporting events and recreational activities such as cycling, outrigger canoeing and sled hockey through SportsNet. Working with area organizations, sports clubs, recreational facilities, and sports professionals, the goal of the program is to help people of all abilities develop healthy, active lifestyles.
April 13, 2011 marked 13 years of service by SportsNet to the Greater Rochester Community. This anniversary begins a 13 month initiative to create awareness, raise funds, and provide sponsorship opportunities to corporations and businesses.
