Vestibular Therapy

Vestibular Rehabilitation is an exercise approach to decrease dizziness and imbalance resulting from vestibular disorders.

Common causes of vestibular disorders include:

  • Blows to the head or whiplash
  • Ear infections
  • Viruses or diseases affecting the central nervous system
  • High doses or long-term use of certain medications

Vestibular Rehabilitation is provided by a physical therapist with specialized training in the treatment of vestibular disorders.

The physical therapist will evaluate an individual’s:

  • Experiences of dizziness
  • Balance and coordination
  • Sensation
  • Gait
  • Range of motion
  • Strength

Based on the results of this evaluation, an individualized plan of treatment is developed for the client.

The therapy typically includes weekly or biweekly treatments for six to eight weeks; during which the therapist will provide:

  • Balance retraining
  • Vestibular habituation exercises
  • Conditioning
  • Home exercise program
